- Toyama, Japan — heavy-snow region: the flat roof is designed for the local snow load; the courtyard is not open to the sky but covered by a sloped double-glazed laminated rooflight, so snow slides off and melt and rain run to the roof gutters, with vents underneath against condensation; seismic design as well

- Concept design: a licensed Japanese architect (kenchikushi) and structural engineer must check it against the Building Standards Act and the Fire Service Act; the guest rooms need a licence under the Hotel Business Act (simple lodging or ryokan/hotel) or the Private Lodging Business Act, and the café a restaurant business permit
