Coffee education mixes mechanisms, rules of thumb, conventions and marketing. Café OS labels which is which.
Coffee knowledge is full of rules of thumb, regional conventions, marketing claims and simplifications. They are not necessarily wrong, but they are not the same kind of thing. Café OS labels key claims with one of six levels:
- Established Mechanism
- Physically or chemically well-understood cause and effect.
- Strong Evidence
- Supported by reliable research; mechanism details still being refined.
- Common Practice
- What the industry usually does — not the only right way.
- Rule of Thumb
- A useful starting point most of the time, with exceptions.
- Preference
- No right or wrong — only what you like.
- Open Question
- No reliable answer yet.
Processing, flavor, water, roast and espresso recipes need this most.
Mechanistic visualization, not scientific simulation
The 3D scenes and models exist to explain causal structure, not to make quantitatively accurate predictions. Wherever an approximation is used, the scene says so.
